When I started my digital template business five years ago, I had one goal: to design editorial, stunning designs that look like they were pulled out of a magazine spread, and make these designs accessible to small businesses and entrepreneurs.

But before Canva templates and AI-generated visuals, there was me at 15, sitting in front of my bulky desktop computer, designing mock magazine layouts using my brother’s photography on weekends. He was one of those rare photographers from the pre-iPhone era, when lighting, lenses, and composition skills were a true craft.

Even my earliest designs looked surprisingly good because I had incredible photos at my fingertips. High-quality imagery that captured the raw essence of the person being photographed. I still remember making mock brochures with backstage shots from Paris Fashion Week or images of me and Fall Out Boy (one of those gigs I got roped into because my brother needed a last-minute model. Easily the highlight of my teenage years.)

Solving My Problem: Finding Beautiful and Functional Photos

Fast forward to 2020. When I officially launched my own digital design template business, I kept hitting the same wall: finding stock photos that were elevated, realistic, and editorial enough to include in my designs.

Pixabay, Pexels, and even Canva’s built-in photo library had options, but I spent hours digging for the good ones. And when I finally found a handful that worked, I’d see them used by a dozen other brands. It was frustrating.
