Build a Thoughtful Instagram Content Strategy
Ever sat staring at a blank page in Canva thinking, “What on earth do I post today?” You’re not alone. Most entrepreneurs, coaches, and creatives struggle to balance beautiful design with strategic messaging. You want your feed to look cohesive and professional, but you also want it to attract followers who become clients.
That’s exactly why I created my Canva Templates for Entrepreneurs. They help small businesses show up professionally and consistently, save time, and focus on creating meaningful content.
Below are ten practical tips to design content that builds trust and drives action. With the right Canva templates, you can create a stylish, cohesive feed that reflects your brand beautifully.
Don’t Post Just to Post. Aim for Quality.
It’s tempting to post just to “stay active,” but if you’re rushing content that doesn’t say anything meaningful, it’s better to skip a day. People can feel when something was thrown together. While consistency matters, quality and purpose matter more.
Before hitting publish, ask yourself:
- Does this post teach, inspire, or connect in some way?
- Would I save or share this if I saw it on someone else’s feed?
- Does it align with what I want people to associate with my brand?
If it’s a no, pause. Rushed, filler posts might keep you visible short-term, but intentional posts build recognition and trust long-term. You don’t need to post every day. You just need to post something worth showing up for.
Have a Clear Purpose for Every Post
Every post should move your business closer to a goal. Before you start creating, ask yourself what you want this post to accomplish.
If your goal is to grow leads, think about how you will capture contact information. You might direct people to your website, encourage them to download a freebie, or invite them to join your email list.
If you’re promoting a service or product, guide people toward the next step. Use a clear and friendly call to action such as “Book a free consultation” or “Grab the guide.”
Even educational or inspirational posts should have purpose. They might aim to build trust, nurture your community, or start a meaningful conversation.
When you understand the purpose behind each post, you can design content that is not only beautiful but also intentional. My strategic Canva templates make it easy to organize your message and visually support the action you want your audience to take.
Create Content Around a Design, Not the Other Way Around
Most people start typing, and then scramble to make a design fit the words. That usually leads to cluttered layouts and inconsistent visuals. Instead, start with your design system first.
When your colors, fonts, and layouts are already in place, you can focus on writing content that fits naturally into those spaces. Choose three to five layouts you’ll reuse, add your brand fonts and colors, and write short, purposeful text that fits each design.
This small shift saves time and helps your visuals stay instantly recognizable. Start with a design that captures your brand energy and let your content flow from there.
Create Binge-able Content Through Storytelling
Most people talk at their audience (“Here’s my new offer!”) instead of to them. What works better is storytelling. You don’t need a dramatic backstory—just real-life moments your audience relates to.
Think of the last time you had a setback, figured something out the hard way, or changed your approach. That’s your next post. Turn your lessons into carousels, your journey into stories, and your captions into conversations.
Prompts that work:
- “What I wish I knew before launching”
- “POV: It’s January 2026 and you’re finally booking your dream clients”
- “Another day of creating endless content with no real results? Here’s how to avoid that.”
Our Brooklyn Canva Templates have story-telling built inside and are designed specifically for coaches/educational content. Each post already comes with strategic content ideas that make it easy to know what to write.
Share Real, Relatable, and Vulnerable Moments
Perfection is boring. People connect through honesty, humor, and humanity.
Do you engage more with a post that says “3 Productivity Hacks” or one that says “I spent half my morning staring at emails I didn’t answer”? When you show up as yourself—imperfect, evolving, figuring it out—you instantly become more trustworthy.
Use your templates to share something real:
- “Here’s what I learned when my first post flopped.”
- “Here’s what I wish I’d known before starting my business.”
Those are the posts people save and share.
Experiment With a Variety of Post Types
If every post looks the same, your audience will scroll past without stopping. Variety keeps your content engaging and helps you connect with different types of followers.
For example, you might rotate between about the brand posts, services/offers, and client testimonials. Each format uses different engagement cues, and your audience something fresh each time while staying on brand.
Here are some other formats:
- Educational Posts: Share quick tips or insights that teach your audience something valuable.
- Story-Driven Posts: Use behind-the-scenes moments or personal reflections to build connection.
- Promotional Posts: Highlight your offers, freebies, or services with clear calls to action.
I wrote a whole blog post about Instagram design trends in my blog Instagram Post Design Trends & Best Practices for 2025. You can get inspiration and learn more about creating visual variety.
Repurpose Long-Form Content
You don’t always need to start from scratch. Repurpose what you already have, such as blog posts, email newsletters, podcast transcripts, or captions that performed well. Pull one paragraph, quote, or takeaway and turn it into a carousel or a static post.
For example:
- Turn a blog post into a “5 Quick Tips” carousel.
- Break down a newsletter into three single-image posts with short captions.
- Share a client story from a testimonial and pair it with an image or mockup.
Repurposing helps you stay consistent while reinforcing your message. It also gives new followers a chance to discover your older ideas in a fresh way.
Dedicate Focused Time to Create, Not Scramble
Designing posts on the fly drains your creativity. Instead, dedicate a few focused hours each week to plan, write, and design intentionally. When you block time to create, you’re not just batching posts, you’re building momentum. You can see your ideas as a whole, spot themes, and make sure every post ties back to your bigger message or offer.
Here’s what that might look like:
- Set aside two hours on a quiet morning or afternoon.
- Open your Canva templates, caption notes, and any saved ideas.
- Design five to ten posts aligned with your weekly goals.
- Schedule or save drafts so you’re not scrambling later.
This rhythm removes daily pressure and builds a sustainable, creative routine. All of my Canva Template Packs are designed to help you create multiple high-quality posts in one sitting.
Add Clear Calls-to-Action to Every Post
You’d be surprised how often great posts end with no next step. People rarely act unless you tell them how. Slides like “What do you think?” or “Have you experienced this too?” turn passive viewers into active participants.
Other simple CTAs include:
- “Comment ‘resource’ for my free guide.”
- “DM me if you’ve been here too.”
- “If you liked this, follow for more design tips.”
All of my Canva templates include engagement-focused slides that make it easy to guide your audience into responding, saving, or starting a conversation. These prompts are designed to feel personal and genuine, not forced.
